Liebster Award Nomination!

Liebster Award Winner

Chillin’ in Krakow, Poland

A huge thank you to Natalie and Dean of The Smart Way Round for nominating us! Natalie and Dean are a husband and wife duo who met while traveling in Africa. They have taken the most epic road trip we have ever heard of: London, England to Melbourne, Australia. That’s 20,000 km (over 12,000 miles)! Wow!

What is a Liebster?

The Liebster is an award given to bloggers by bloggers. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen connections you have made within the industry and expose your blog to others. It’s basically a great big shout out and thank you to those who support and inspire you. For our readers, this is a great way to get to know us a little better.  Without further ado, on to the questions.

1. What three things can you not go traveling without?

Alana: My iPhone, a good pair of walking shoes and sunglasses.

Matt: My Lululemon track jacket (going on 4 years), my iPhone and notepad for taking notes and writing down ideas.

2. If you could visit only one more place in the world, where would that be?

Alana: Argentina

Matt: New Zealand

3. What is the most unusual food you have tried on your travels?

Alana: I recently tried raw octopus in Japan. I’m a lifelong vegetarian so this is quite unusual for me.

Matt: I had chicken feet in my soup in Indonesia, which was interesting.

4. Are you a luxury traveler or more of an adventure traveler?

We’re a mix of both. We recently finished a two-month camping trip in Africa, which was a huge adventure. We even bungee jumped off the Victoria Falls Bridge! However, we do love a good spa day and a luxury king size bed now and again.

Victoria Falls Bungee Jump

5. Who inspired you to travel?

During our 2013 trip to Nicaragua we met a couple who gave up their corporate lifestyle to live in Nicaragua for six months. They traded being a lawyer and an accountant for leading yoga classes and surf lessons with absolutely no regrets.

6. What is your biggest travel regret?

We’ve been to Cancun on multiple occasions and have always decided to skip visiting the Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza. Each time we said we will visit it next time and now we are not sure if we will ever go back to Cancun.

7. What is the coolest thing to see in your hometown?

Madison, Wisconsin has the largest locally produced farmers’ market in the U.S. Our favorite activity in the Summer is to head down to the capitol square on Saturday morning, grab a coffee and browse the fantastic selection of Wisconsin specialties. Once 10:00am rolls around we make our way over to the patio at Genna’s for a Bloody Mary. In fact, Genna’s is where we got engaged!

8. Share your favorite travel photo and why it is your favorite?

Lion in Serengeti National Park

King of the Jungle

This photo was taken on the last morning of our Serengeti Safari. For us, this photo encompasses many things. First, how lucky we were to come across this magnificent creature in the wild. The early morning sun shining, a light breeze blowing and this guy was practically posing for us. Second, this kind of sums up what we are doing. We always thought an African safari would only ever be a dream and assumed it was too expensive. If we were rich or enjoying a very comfortable retirement, maybe. But, everything came full circle that morning and it was awesome!

9. What is the worst souvenir you have ever bought?

We brought back several packages of organic coffee from Nicaragua for gifts. Once we opened our own, we realized it was dry and tasted awful. Too late though as we have already gifted it to our family and friends! (Sorry guys)

10. If you could live in any country, which country would it be?

Alana: Of all the countries we have visited so far I think I would most enjoy living in Bali.

Matt: I agree with Alana. We loved our time in Ubud and it was a nice balance between back home type amenities and Asian prices.

11. What do you most enjoy about traveling?

Meeting people from all over the world!

Just recently we visited our friend Carina in Germany. We met Carina during our time in Les, Bali. She arrived a few days after us and we instantly connected. She told us to contact her if Germany made it into our European plans. Well, it did and Carina hosted us for four days in Hannover. She even took time off of work to show us around the nearby town of Hamburg. We got to meet her boyfriend and two friends from childhood. We hope they all visit us in the U.S.!

About Matt

Matt is one-half of Great Big Globe. He loves the Green Bay Packers, chips and salsa, a strong Americano and knows an incredible amount of useless sports trivia.

  1. Jody Apfelbeck

Congratulations on your Liebster award, and you did a great job on the questions! Love, Mom

  2. Fresh air is where it’s at! We’re currently dog and house sitting in rural Turkey. Spending every possible minute outside! So cool that you guys are based at Ngepi Camp. That place is so awesome!

  3. Oh my…. how I agree with the need for a King Size Bed and a Day Spa. haha After Overlanding/ Camping from Nairobi to Cape Town and then 3 weeks in a roof top camper… we are now in a smaller version of a Double bed at Ngepi haha. Michael is such a tall guy and half his body hangs over the edge. We are CRAVING a King Size Bed, a massage and a foot scrub. What I wouldn’t give for an Eye Brow Wax too hehe.

That being said I wouldn’t trade our current location for any big city. Just something about being out here in the fresh air!
